Earths to Come – Venice Version

VR Dome Theatre with Spatialized Sound

2024, 13:00 minutes

Venice Biennale Cinema Immersive

“Masterfully animated… a piece of rare aesthetic consistency … a seminal piece of Virtual Reality…”
– Venice News Daily
“…mesmerizing worldbuilding with an incredible soundscape… The result is something that goes beyond simple storytelling and becomes a visceral experience... Not to be missed.”
– Loud and Clear Reviews, Venice 2024

What makes Earths to Come groundbreaking? Immersive/VR works are usually experienced alone in a headset. Earths to Come is a communal experience. Rather than being isolated, audience members in headsets were nested within a 6-meter dome and enveloped by spatialized sounds of the human voice from 16 speakers.

The title, Earths to Come, springs from a line from an Emily Dickinson poem cataloged by its first line, “I have no life but this.” A small poem, it holds many dualities: vastness and insularity, public and private, doubt and assurance, longing and desire. In exploring this poem from queer icon Emily Dickinson, collaborators Rose, inti, and Roomful of Teeth created compelling and evocative images and simmering and soaring vocals artfully mixed by Massimilano Borghesi.
